According to the CDC, more than 70 million Americans struggle with obesity, and another 29 million are overweight. Diet and exercise can help us achieve a fitter and healthier version of ourselves. Despite our best effort, though, you may have some lingering body fat—the solution: CoolSculpting.
More Americans than ever are turning to CoolSculpting to eliminate unwanted traces of body fat. The CoolSculpting procedure freezes fat, breaking down the cell without affecting the surrounding muscles and joints. The body naturally disposes of the dead cells through the liver, making it the perfect way to see the results without going under the knife.
CoolSculpting® Before and After
What is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting provides a non-invasive way to remove pesky fat cells. The FDA-cleared method uses fat freezing, otherwise known as cryolipolysis, to remove the cells. Even if you have body fat in a hard-to-reach area, Cool Sculpting treatment can eliminate 20% to 25% of the fat in the treated region.
After your initial consultation in Memphis, TN, a CoolSculpting professional will target the areas where you want to reduce body fat. They place a slab of fat between two panels and cool the fat cells to below freezing. The rounded paddles act like vacuums as they freeze the isolated skin for up to two hours.
The results may vary between patients, but most people say CoolSculpting works within a month. The targeted area transforms from pinchable and soft to firm and thick. This mild fat reduction offers a straightforward way to improve your waistline or prepare for bikini season without making dramatic life changes.C
Target Hard-to-Reach Areas
The CoolSculpting procedure helps wherever you have stubborn fat. According to the FDA, patients can select from nine different areas for fat freezing. That includes under the chin, upper arm, inner thigh, and abdomen.
Its versatility makes CoolSculpting the best way to reduce body fat without invasive surgery. The FDA-cleared process offers a safe and effective alternative to liposuction. You can see results within weeks and don’t have to worry about extensive downtime after the treatment.
The Benefits of CoolSculpting
CoolSculpting treatment offers a friendly and affordable way to get rid of stubborn body fat. It helps eliminate small subcutaneous pockets that won’t go away with otherwise good habits. The FDA even gave the safe and swift approach a thumbs up in 2010. According to the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, clinics have seen an 823% increase in CoolSculpting treatments since then.
Note that CoolSculpting is not for everyone, and results may vary. The best candidates should have an active lifestyle and a healthy diet. We do not recommend the procedure for anyone with cold agglutinin disease, paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, or cryoglobulinemia.
Results After One Treatment
One CoolSculpting procedure is all it takes to start seeing results. A single session can reduce unwanted bulkiness or bulges up to 25%. You can also revisit SkinBody Memphis, in case you want additional treatment.
We recommend CoolSculpting any area of the body, including love handles or a double chin. The number of treatments varies based on your ideal results and current health; however, most patients are satisfied within one to three visits. While it’s possible to get additional CoolSculpting treatment, our clinicians in Memphis, TN, may run out of pinchable fat as the skin becomes progressively tighter.
While everyone has a different pain tolerance, most people feel little more than numbness. During the procedure, you may feel a slight tug as the clinician places the fat between the panels.
Other side effects can include a pinching sensation as the fat cells pull apart in the moments following the treatment. Once you finish the procedure, there may be itching, redness, and swelling. Many people find the process tolerable, as some patients read books, watch videos, or even take a nap.
While you enjoy your new results and body, you may also notice some minor side effects. When you walk out of Skin Body Memphis, you’ll likely experience only mild symptoms, including tenderness, aching, itching, and skin sensitivity.
Frequently Asked Questions
The number of fat cells is set during childhood and adolescence. That number varies little in adulthood. The number of fat cells is specific to you and varies from person to person
When you start to gain weight, those fat cells expand, which in turn causes your waistline (and hips, and double chin, and thighs) to expand. When you eat healthy and exercise regularly, those fat cells shrink to give a slimmer and trimmer shape. If you stop those healthy habits, they will expand again, adding unwanted bulges.
CoolSculpting®, using cryolipolysis technology, is a noninvasive treatment that targets and freezes fat cells, resulting in up to 20-25% fat reduction in the treated areas.

CoolSculpting® is FDA-cleared for the treatment of visible fat bulges in the submental (under the chin) and submandibular (under the jawline) areas, thigh, abdomen and flank, along with bra fat, back fat, underneath the buttocks (also known as banana roll) and upper arm. It is also FDA-cleared to affect the appearance of lax tissue with submental area treatments.
The applicator will be placed on the treatment area and there will be a slight sucking sensation as it adheres to your body, followed by that signature cooling effect. During the procedure you may experience sensations of pulling, tugging, mild pinching, intense cold, tingling, stinging, aching, and cramping at the treatment site. These sensations subside as the area becomes numb. Following the procedure, typical side effects include temporary redness, swelling, blanching, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging, tenderness, cramping, aching, itching, or skin sensitivity, and sensation of fullness in the back of the throat after submental or submandibular area treatment.
See additional Important Safety Information below.
After the applicator is detached, your provider will do a brief massage on the area to break up the treated fat cells and enhance the fat reduction. That’s it!

Each CoolSculpting® treatment is different, so it depends on which areas of the body and how many of them you plan on doing. Depending on the area, treatment can be done in as little as 35 minutes. The CoolSmooth applicator is discontinued, however some practices may still use it. If you opt to do multiple treatments in a session, expect to spend more time. Some providers have multiple CoolSculpting® machines, allowing patients to do multiple treatment areas at once, reducing the amount of time spent in office.

While you will see up to a 20-25% fat reduction in the treated area after a single treatment, it depends on the person and the area being treated. Your provider will work with you to determine if additional treatments are necessary to reach your desired goal.
You’ll start to see changes as soon as 1-3 months post-treatment. Final results may take 6 months or more.
CoolSculpting® uses cryolipolysis, which is just a technical way to say fat-freezing. When fat cells freeze, they die and are then naturally eliminated through the body’s natural process. Don’t worry: This process happens so gradually, you won’t necessarily notice a difference in your day-to-day life.
CoolSculpting® has been cleared by the FDA to effectively treat nine different areas of the body (see the FDA cleared areas below). Clinical trials have demonstrated CoolSculpting® to be safe and effective in reducing fat in certain areas.
The CoolSculpting® treatment is not for everyone. You should not have it done if you suffer from cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease, or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria. The CoolSculpting® procedure is not a weight loss treatment. As with any medical procedure, ask your physician if CoolSculpting® is right for you.
Following the procedure, typical side effects include temporary redness, swelling, blanching, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging, tenderness, cramping, aching, itching, or skin sensitivity, and sensation of fullness in the back of the throat after submental or submandibular area treatment. Rare side effects may also occur. Paradoxical hyperplasia (visibly enlarged tissue volume in the treated area) may develop two to five months after treatment and requires surgical intervention for correction. As with any medical procedure, ask your physician if CoolSculpting® is right for you.
The CoolSculpting® treatment helps eliminate stubborn pockets of fat. But, since CoolSculpting® is not a weight loss treatment, it is possible to gain weight post-treatment if you don’t keep up your healthy habits. This kind of weight gain will most likely happen evenly throughout your body, not just in treatment areas.
Because CoolSculpting® is a voluntary cosmetic treatment, it is not normally covered by insurance providers and FSA companies. Check directly with your insurer to learn what is covered under your plan benefits.
Get Rid of Stubborn Fat
CoolSculpting treatment takes 35 to 60 minutes, with marked results arriving in the following weeks. You’ll notice a visible fat reduction in less than a month and more dramatic improvements within eight weeks. The two-month mark gives the CoolSculpting treatment enough time to eliminate 90% of targeted fat cells.
CoolSculpting results are not permanent, even though the fat cells cannot regrow. New fat cells can take their place, and you may gain weight if you aren’t careful. The best way to see results is to maintain a healthy diet and exercise.
