Waxing Memphis

One of the most efficient, fastest methods for temporary hair removal is waxing. This treatment applies warm wax on the skin, which adheres to the hair so each strand is pulled out when the wax is removed. When the strip of wax is removed from the skin, the clinician pulls it in the opposite direction of the hair growth to pull out as much of the hair follicle as possible.

The application of the wax is easy, and great results can be achieved in a short appointment.

At SkinBody Memphis, we offer a variety of waxing treatments, including:

  • Brazilian
  • Bikini
  • Brow

Waxing can be done on both small and large areas of the body. We offer personalized services for every client, based on your hair removal goals.

Waxing Results

The results from a waxing treatment are immediate – the hair is pulled out, so you can enjoy smooth, hair-free skin until the new growth starts to come back again in a few weeks. For some people, waxing consistently over time can cause thinning and a reduction in hair regrowth, helping to extend the time you can wait between appointments.

It’s important to understand that shaving and waxing are very different. Shaving cuts the hair off at the surface, while waxing pulls the hair from the root. When the hair is removed along with the root, it takes longer for the hair to grow back. In comparison, the trimming effect of shaving means that you will notice hair regrowth within a day or two.

Waxing results can last between three to four weeks, and clients often notice that the results improve over time.

Side Effects and Post-Treatment Care

It’s possible that you will experience a few side effects after a waxing appointment. Potential side effects include:

  • Ingrown hairs
  • Irritation
  • Redness
  • Pain
  • Bumps
  • Rashes
  • Sun sensitivity

In rare cases, a person might have an allergic reaction to the wax. Other serious side effects can result in infection or scarring, although these issues are uncommon.

Preparing for Your Waxing Appointment

You need to have enough hair for the wax to grab, which is why you should avoid shaving and other hair removal treatments prior to the appointment. Ideally, you need between 1/4” – 1/2” of hair length in the treatment area. The day before your treatment, you should not exfoliate the skin, swim, or tan. If desired, take over-the-counter pain medication 30 minutes before your appointment.

During the treatment, the skin is cleaned first. Then, the warm wax is applied to the treatment area, and you need to hold still and wait while the wax is cooling. Removal of warm wax isn’t effective because it’s not firm enough to hold onto the hair. When the wax has cooled, then we remove each strip quickly with a swift motion. You might feel momentary discomfort – waxing tends to be more painful than shaving. But the pain will subside and you can enjoy no hair for a few weeks.

Keep in mind that waxing is not recommended for people using certain medications, such as:

  • Retinol-based creams
  • Retin-A
  • Accutane
  • Hormonal birth control
  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Antibiotics
